I'm So Busy At Work...
...that I can't even mock the Commander. Ugh.
I've been forced today to wear dress pants, a dress shirt, and a sweater. I heart client days. God help me. I look like a charter member of the Young Republican Club. Jesum.
Today's "Play At Home" Topic: Best Cover Song Ever.
Here are my top 3, in reverse order:
"Gloomy Sunday", Sarah McLachlin
"Take Me To The River", Talking Heads
"Higher Ground", Red Hot Chili Peppers
Discuss. And pray for my 401(k)-contributing soul.

I have to go for a couple of obscure one. Perhaps not the best covers ever, but ones I really like.
In My Life - Sean Connery (spoken, w/ strings in the background. excellent)
Lovers in a Dangerous Time - Barenaked Ladies (I like it more than the original)

Mr. Tambourine Man -- William Shatner

right now I really like the Atari's cover of "Boys of Summer"

I drove all night -- Celine Dion.
Ha! Just kidding ryan, oh how you love Celine.
Seriously, though, Dave Matthews doing "All Along the Watch Tower." Exxxxxcellent.

Similarly, they had that Elvis special around Christmastide, where they had current artists doing covers of Elvis songs. Result went from "Well that was decent" (Norah Jones) to "They Look Like They're Being Tortured" (No Doubt). The only atomic bomb cover (and by atomic bomb, I mean "This blows up the entire show with how cool it is") was Dave Matthews take on "Stuck on You." Cooler than cool.

The Sundays version of Wild Horses is pretty fab, and it was used in Buffy. Woo.

As much as it's been overdone, and even though no one will ever do a cooler version than the Bobby Fuller cover, The Clash's bang up job of "I Fought The Law" by Sonny Curtis. And for that matter, Camper Van Beethoven's cover of the Clash's "White Riot".

hmmmm, i know i'm just a youngster and may not have the musical acumen as my fellow posters, may i offer up for suggestion the following....
Jeff Buckley: Hallejulia
Johnny Cash: Hurt
G&R: live and let die
You would think that in the coming years that The MTV Idol show will blow this all to hell in the coming years, unless they put Avril on everyone. BTW this weeks sign of the apocalypse is this. Paramount pictures is turning Skater Boy into a major motion picture. (And Casey Starts Loading his gun.....)

Casey, I think you mean Sk8tr Boi. Heh heh.
And Johnny Cash has done some cool covers on his past two albums, including Hurt. Great video as well.

Dave Matthews is my rock god. "Two Step" is one of his best. And Heather was completely right with "All along the watchtower". Mmmmmmmm.
Also, Jeff Buckley's "Lilac wine" is lovely.

Jeff Buckley was lovely, period. I beginning to think we should be guarding the border with Canada more heavily, and not because of the loosening of their marijuana laws. No, it's because they are responsible for giving us Avril and Celine. This assault must be stopped.
Sign of the apocalypse #2: the Kelly Clarkson & Justin Guarini (sp?) movie. Casey, please leave a bullet for me.

"Dancing Days" - Stone Temple Pilots
I don't feel the need to elaborate.
Posted by: Diana at May 30, 2003 12:09 PM
Ooh. Also "Easy (Like Sunday Morning" - Faith No More
Posted by: Diana at May 30, 2003 12:15 PM
I'm tempted to say Limp Biskit's version of Faith, although the original was so good...

Gold Dust Woman as done by Hole. I'm not a fan of Courtney Love the person, but she kicks some ass as a musician.

"Life's What You Make It" by the Divine Comedy (originally Talk Talk)
"Wish You Were Here" by Radiohead and Sparklehorse (originally Pink Floyd)
"Are Friends Electric?" by Moloko (originally by Gary Neuman)

Jimi Hendrix + "All Along the Watchtower" = best cover EVER.
Also, The Vines- "Ms. Jackson" and Bob Dylan singing Radiohead's "Creep."
Posted by: Kyle at May 31, 2003 04:52 AM
10,000 Maniacs doing "Because the Night."

Ry! I'll be back later if for nothing else to download the above mentioned tunes. ::gawdywink:: Yeah!! Weee!
The virgin music girl.

I can't believe I forgot the Hendrix cover. Too true.
I'd have to potentially put Frente's "Bizzare Love Triangle" in there too somewhere. Not top 3, but top 10.

How bout Travis doing Hit Me Baby One More Time, REM doing U2's One and John Cale's far superior version of hallelujah!
Posted by: Conor P at September 3, 2003 07:14 AM
There is no superior version of Hallelujah you can't beat Jeff!!!
Not strictly a cover but how about Jimi's version of Day tripper, got to be up there it's Jimi!
No Quarter- Tool, I didn't think anyone could cover Led Zeppelin well, I was wrong.
Tomorrow Never Knows- Dave Matthews Band. Lets face it they could cover Hit me baby one more time and it'd sound good!
