The Gambler/The Rambler
A few thoughts as I wonder if anyone will wonder if the dirt-like substance on my left hand illegally aids my blogging skills…
****
I know I’m a jerk for not watching the World Series, but come on, Detroit and St. Louis, don’t hate on me. I just hate Joe Buck and Tim McCarver that much. At least when they called the 2004 games, I could tune into the local radio station and listen to that while watching the live feed. During that series, The Girl coined an excellent phrase while watching the television coverage: “Oh, shut the Buck up!” Right then I knew I’d made an excellent choice to date. For some guys, it’s the time she invites her sorority sister over to “share the wealth”. For me, it was this. Yes, I’m aware my priorities are vaguely odd.
Best Album I’ve Downloaded in Months: “Stadium Arcadium” by the Red Hot Chili Peppers. A former coworker of mine fed me a few tracks, and I sought out the rest. Just an endless supply of good tracks, good music, and good grooves. A double-album that doesn’t have any noticeable weak spots? Thank you, please.
Best Music I Found By Accident But Should Have Appreciated Much Earlier: anything by The Ramones. Over this past weekend, I got called into do a freelance job for my old company. The computer that I used had over seventy tracks by this band, and damnit, every one made me smile or headbang or both. My only exposure beforehand was the most obvious: “I Wanna Be Sedated”, “Blitzkrieg Bop”, and so forth. But for over 90 minutes on end, I was completely captivated by what I heard. And in 90 minutes, you can hear like, 80 Ramones songs. Worth checking into if you haven’t. Lord knows I slacked on checking these songs out. Don’t be a schmuck like me.
Best shows currently on air, in order: “Lost”, “Battlestar: Galactica”, “The Office”, “Heroes”, “Veronica Mars”. “Veronica” used to be third, but the minute they started using her overdubs to recap the plot, they lost me a little. Also, if anyone can tell me what happened to the Logan I knew and loved for the first two seasons, I’d appreciate it. Maybe Weevil ate him. (Oooh, burn.)
On Sunday, I played a videogame for five straight hours. Last time I did this, it ended with my saving the princess from King Koopa. Major milestone, y’all. (I was on a roll in “X-Men: Legends”, y’all. Who knew Nightcrawler was so valuable in combat? I’m telling you, hitting “R2” plus the square button can get you out of many a tight jam. That German freak can wail on bosses. And yes, I’ve said too much again.”
Buying the next two games for when I beat “X-Men: Legends” was a bit tricky. Not in terms of selecting the games: buying “Resident Evil 4” and “Black” or under $20 each was an easy solution. But having to momentarily bond with the GameStop cashier while he rang up my order? Awkward beyond the telling. I mean, I know I’m a geek, but I’m not THAT much of a geek, you know? Like, I’m excited The Green Arrow showed up on “Smallville” to form the Justice League and all, but I’m not too concerned with the “Smallville” version of Oliver Queen versus the canonical versions of him, you know? Let’s just say this kid was waaaay more excited about me buying these games than I was, and I’d spent four months waiting for these titles to reach “Greatest Hits” status and therefore come down in price. Just an awkward 117 seconds all told.
Can you believe all this stuff actually goes on in my life and I still convince a girl to share my bed? Seriously, it’s a trick greater than anything in “The Prestige”. Go me.

Dude, haven't you played the a Ramones song on Guitar Hero eighty-seven times and rocked out each and every time? So how did it take you so long to investigate the rest of their body of work? (Which, yes, you can listen to in its entirety in, like, an hour and a half.) Of course, I am just now investigating the Judas Priest canon, so I guess I can't be too judgmental.
I would put Battlestar Galactica above Lost. I mean, Lost is an amazing show and a phenomenon and all, but BG? Has freakin' CYLONS having scary partial-cylon babies with Starbuck. The drama!
