The 'Shipping News

YouTube’s a great thing, don’t get me wrong, but like any benevolent tool, it contains the capacity for misuse. It’s like The Force that way. And one of the darkest sides of Youtube lies in the area of ‘shipper videos.

‘Shippers videos are those put together by fans of certain television shows in which the celebrate the relationship between two people. Sometimes these relationships actually exist within the context of the show, often time they do not. And some of the instances of the latter are so weird and out there that I’ve purposely not linked them below lest your eyes start to bleed. (All in all, though, these videos compare to some of the fanfic out there on the interwebs, spanning all mass media and detailing every possible perverse thought ever contained in the collective consciousness of mankind. I need a shower just having typed that.)

I don’t want to stereotype the creators of this video, but let’s just say they are not partners at a high-powered law firm. They are young fans with access to basic editing software, a passion for their shows, and access to the same song database as the production team of “Laguna Beach”. Armed with these three things, they’ve created an insane assortment of videos for your viewing pleasure. Usually to Sia’s “Breath Me”, though I haven’t linked any of the 54,298 instances below.

Instead, I thought I’d look up what these fans have done to a few of my favorite shows. The short answer is that they’ve managed to create compilations that would make the promotion people at the CW drool with envy. (Seriously…watch any promo on the CW after watching these…they are identical in tone and pacing!) While the CW might be envious, I’m vaguely nauseous. And in the great tradition of “Ew, this is nasty, come here, you gotta taste this,” I give you the following ‘shipper videos.

“Lost”

To be fair, parts of Season 3 have felt like this.

“Heroes”

More than a little creepy now that we know he’s the cheerleader’s uncle. Wait, she’s 15. It was always a little creepy.

“Battlestar Galactica”

Nothing sparks a little romance like a little genocide.

“Veronica Mars”

Bonus points for the Metallica cover…Sweet Mary of Lars Ulrich, that’s horrible.

“The Office”

I am a total Jim/Pam fan, but GROBAN? I am physically unable to not mock the Groban.

24

“Damnit, Chloe, TELL ME WHERE THE TROJANS ARE!”

"Smallville"

Oh, like you didn’t see this one coming.
